We are all torturers now

April 4th, 1984. Last night to the flicks. All war films. One very good one of a ship full of refugees being bombed somewhere in the Mediterranean. Audience much amused by shots of a great huge fat man trying to swim away with a helicopter after him, first you saw him wallowing along in the water like a porpoise, then you saw him through the helicopters gunsights, then he was full of holes and the sea round him turned pink and he sank as suddenly as though the holes had let in the water, audience shouting with laughter when he sank. then you saw a lifeboat full of children with a helicopter hovering over it. there was a middle-aged woman might have been a jewess sitting up in the bow with a little boy about three years old in her arms. little boy screaming with fright and hiding his head between her breasts as if he was trying to burrow right into her and the woman putting her arms round him and comforting him although she was blue with fright herself, all the time covering him up as much as possible as if she thought her arms could keep the bullets off him. then the helicopter planted a 20 kilo bomb in among them terrific flash and the boat went all to matchwood. then there was a wonderful shot of a child's arm going up up up right up into the air a helicopter with a camera in its nose must have followed it up and there was a lot of applause from the party seats but a woman down in the prole part of the house suddenly started kicking up a fuss and shouting they didnt oughter of showed it not in front of kids they didnt it aint right not in front of kids it aint until the police turned her turned her out i dont suppose anything happened to her nobody cares what the proles say typical prole reaction they never - -- from George Orwell's 1984

Forcing naked Iraqi prisoners to pile themselves in human pyramids was not torture, because American cheerleaders do it every year, a court was told today.A lawyer defending Specialist Charles Graner, who is accused of being a ringleader in the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal, argued that piling naked prisoners in pyramids was a valid form of prisoner control. "Don’t cheerleaders all over America form pyramids six to eight times a year. Is that torture?" said Guy Womack, Sergeant Graner’s lawyer, in opening arguments to the ten-member military jury at the reservist’s court martial. -- The London Times, January 10, 2005

I haven't see a single case of torture coming out of Abu Ghraib or anywhere else. Am I missing something? -- posted on 01/10/2005 5:23:52 PM PST on FreeRepublic.com by sigarms

Power is in inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing. Do you begin to see, then, what kind of world we are creating? It is the exact opposite of the stupid hedonistic Utopias that the old reformers imagined. A world of fear and treachery is torment, a world of trampling and being trampled upon, a world which will grow not less but more merciless as it refines itself. Progress in our world will be progress towards more pain. The old civilizations claimed that they were founded on love or justice. Ours is founded upon hatred. [...] But always - do not forget this, Winston - always there will be the intoxication of power, increasing and constantly growing subtler. Always, at every moment, there will be the thrill of victory, the sensation of trampling on an enemy who is helpless. If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - for ever. -- George Orwell, 1984

War is peace. Freedom is tyranny. Torture is cheerleading. Welcome to 1984+21.

The myth of a savior

One of the Party's greatest tools for preventing the sheeple from depriving them of power is the myth of a Savior -- a Luke Skywalker, a Neo, a John Connor, who shall come from (where?) and save them from the Mean and Vicious Party.

In reality, there is no savior. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. No sooner does a man gain power, but he then turns his hand towards furthering the Party agenda: the gaining of yet more power for himself and his cronies, which is, after all, the entire purpose of the Party. All that changes is which branch of the Party holds power, not the ultimate goal of dominion over others. All of human history since the invention of agriculture (and thus of agricultural surplusses) can be described as an effort to impose and extend the power of the elite over others. The faces change, the methods gain sophistication year by year as the methods change from brute force to those of deception and use of schools and subtle propaganda to control the very basis by which people think, but the Party is eternal.

The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake. We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?

There is no savior who shall take power and save the people. Never. Any one who desires to take power, who makes revolution to take power, inevitably is corrupted by said power and joins the Party in mind if not in body. Power molds, shapes, changes people into the very image of the Party. The faces change. The Party endures.

Why, then, does this myth of a savior, a strong man who shall save the people from the current meanies in power, continue to have strength? Why, that's simple: It is in the Party's best interests. For if the people are waiting for someone else to save them, then they shall not save themselves. And if the people who in turn strive for power are corrupted by said power into the Party's image... why, that's even better, since it allows the sheeple the illusion of change, when there really is none!

And so it goes in the American provinces of Oceania, where the few who recognize the nature of the Party wait for a savior that shall save them from the evil Party rather than taking action themselves... and shall wait forever.

How to deal with dissent in the "soft" police state

In case you have not noticed, we of the Party do not exhibit outright censorship upon the press. There are no government officials peering over the shoulders of reporters to make sure that they publish only articles that we wish them to publish. There are no black ops squads going out and killing reporters who report things that we of the Party do not like. Yet if you look at the headlines and stories in every newspaper in America, they show a surprising obedience to the Party's official line. How can this be? How can the Party control what the press is printing, without actually censoring them via the power of the State?!

Well, there's a few characteristics of the human animal that are interesting here, which allow the Party to suppress the truth without appearing to suppress the truth. For example:
  1. Human animals are HERD animals, basically hairless gorillas. Like hairless gorillas, they want to be part of the herd. They do not want to be out by themselves. Any human animal that does not think like the rest of the human animals is thus ostracized, expelled, ignored.
  2. Like all herd animals, human animals will, if left to their own devices, blindly follow the leader of the herd. If you attempt to tell the typical human animal that his herd leader is not fit to be leader, said herd animal will typically react with suspicion and anger -- against you, the entity that is challenging the supremecy of his herd leader. Thus in 1972, President Richard Nixon was re-elected by a landslide, despite the electorate knowing about Watergate. Knowledge that does not fit into the human animal's desire to follow his leader is ignored.
  3. Human animals want stability. They want to continue their pointless lives of masticating, fornicating, defecating, and consuming mass quantities without any disruptions caused by nasty little things like "truth".
  4. Human animals do not WANT to know the truth. What human animals want is lies, lies to justify the human animal's pointless life of masticating, fornicating, and defecating, lies that justify the human animal's sloth and mass consumption, bright and shining lives to give meaning to a meaningless life that will be forgotten within minutes of the dead animal's name being carved on a tombstone.
So with that in mind, let us give an example: The destruction of Gary Webb.

The first thing we did, when Gary published an expose' of CIA drug dealing, was ostracize him and his newspaper (principle #1: human animals are herd animals). We used our CIA asset(1) Walter Pincus in the Washington Post to start the task of ostracizing Webb and his newspaper. This took advantage of principle #2: Human animals blindly follow the leader of the herd. And the Washington Post is, for a great many journalists, the leader of the (journalistic) herd. Thus once Pincus published his "rebuttal" of Webb's story, a number of other media outlets blindly followed the leader of the herd (the Post) and similarly published "rebuttals" of Webb's story. Similarly, they did not want to believe ill of the overall leader of the herd (President Reagan's CIA), and thus were predisposed to follow Pincus's lead in the first place. Principle #3: Laziness. We provided a large number of Party officials to do damage control, calmly assuring reporters that Webb was lying. Rather than do their own reporting, these reporters could instead just let Pincus write their stories for them (basically), quote some "off the record" Party officials denying Webb's story, and get paid the same as if they'd actually done real work. This contributed to the herd effect. Other reporters, seeing that the majority of the herd was ostracizing Webb and his newspaper, jumped on the bandwagon. Finally, principle #4, a desire to be lied to. Really, these reporters literally BEGGED for us to lie to them. They wanted to be part of the herd, instead of an outcast like Webb. They wanted to believe the best of the CIA, rather than have to actually do work uncovering the CIA's drug smuggling past. Furthermore, the American public as a *whole* wanted to be lied to, and reporters are conditioned to give the public what they want -- lies, bright and shiny lies, lies to soothe the daily lives of misery and pointless mastication and defecation of human animals whose sole purpose for existing is as cogs in a vast and mighty machine that their pathetic little minds will never comprehend or even perceive.

Within a few short weeks, the editor of the San Jose Mercury News caved. He could not bear being ostracized from the herd. Gary Webb refused to cave, continued to insist upon that "truth" thing, and was ostracized, blacklisted from the journalistic herd. We took his career from him, his livelihood from him, and finally, we took his wife and kids from him. Eventually it was all too much for him, and on the day he was going to be kicked out of his long-time home in suburbia on to the streets, evicted to roam the streets as yet another of those homeless bums that we instinctually avoid looking at when we see them on the streets, he ate a shotgun.

That is what happens to truth-tellers who dare tell the people truths that they do not wish to hear. That, my friends, is why few journalists ever bother writing real stories. Not only are journalists herd animals by nature, but they do not wish to be ostracized from their herd, and examples like Gary Webb make sure that they keep that fear of ostracization deep within their pathetic little souls. Not that most journalists would ever dare go out in front of the pack like Gary Webb did, anyhow. They are, for the most part, a bunch of pathetic sheep, who view their job as being transcriptionists of the words of those in power, who will give equal time to a Garry Webb telling the truth and a CIA official lying, without ever stating in their story "we have evidence that Gary is telling the truth and we have evidence that the CIA official is lying." Why, that would require them to make a judgement! And surely you're asking too much of a poor reporter, whose job, after all, is to be the transcriptionist of those in power, rather than truth (which nobody wants to know anyhow)!

And so it goes in the American provinces of Oceania, which claim to have a "free press" -- yet where every newspaper in the country appears to have the same headlines and quote the same Party officials regarding the allocation of tea and sugar, day after day, year after year, in a lockstep conformity that the Communists could only aspire to... ah yes, the United States of Delusion, where even a free press is just an illusion...

Perceived and received reality in an era of reality TV

So those who would oppose the Party's agenda of continuous war for the health and profit of the Party elite, still reeling from the failure of their plan to flood America with pictures of dead Iraqi children that our soldiers have killed, now appear to be planning to flood the nation with pictures of coffins and graves of American soldiers killed in Iraq, with the stated goal of "bringing the cost home to the American public". This effort is, of course, doomed to failure, because it ignores the nature of reality in an era of reality TV.

Perceived reality -- that which we see with our own eyes -- is the only reality we truly "know". Everything else is received reality -- reality as perceived by other people's eyes, and passed down to us via the imperfect tool of language. And in a world where received reality is filled with fictions and lies, finding any grain of truth -- any grain of what actual reality might have been in that wash of images and prose -- is an arduous task, indeed, is a task beyond the majority of the sheeple. Indeed, it is a task that most of them never even bother with, instead deciding to adopt whatever in this flood of lies most fills their need for lies to sooth their animal souls, and ignoring the rest.

In truth, the vast majority of the sheeple are incapable of telling the difference between reality and fiction. All that is real to them -- ALL that is real -- are their immediate family and friends. Everything else is just a "reality television" show, where, at the end of the hour, the corpses rise from their shallow graves and meet in the cast trailer for champaign and canapes. The people in this photo are no more real to them than the characters on the movie they watched last night.

You say that you are different. You say that you have imagination and empathy, that these pictures truly move you. But face it -- even you do not view Mr. Wood or Mr. Ware of this dKos story as human, but, rather, as fictional characters within a tragi-comedy called "The Iraq Disaster". You do not know Mr. Wood or Mr. Ware as people, other than as imagined people inside your head constructed from bits and pieces of other characters and other people that you have encountered in your life. You know this is a tragedy, but you know this is a tragedy not because you are somehow "better" than the sheeple who will never care about photos such as this, but, rather, because you are gifted with a better imagination and are capable of building a more realistic imaginary person in your head of what Mr. Wood or Mr. Ware MIGHT have been like.

Photos like this will never end war. Never. The human animal simply isn't wired that way. The only thing that will end war is if massive numbers of people are killed, and their family and friends who are directly impacted become the majority. That is why we of the Party deliberately have sent too few people to Iraq. By limiting the number of soldiers sent to Iraq, we limit the number of family and friends impacted by their deaths. And since we do not care whether decisive victory is possible -- indeed, victory would be a disaster for the Party, as proven in 1992 -- it does not matter whether the war is going well or badly. All that is needed is that a state of war should exist. In that way, we of the Party give our subjects the bright and shiny lies that they want, the ones that hide the ugly truths from them, the lies that give them an enemy to hate, the lies that make them feel part of the Chosen People, God's people, Americans, the lies of patriotism and pride that give meaning to their pathetic lives of quiet desperation and misery. War is, indeed, the health of the Party.

The illusion of choice in the "soft" police state

George Orwell was wrong. The Party need not create a harsh police state in order to gain and extend its power. Indeed, a harsh police state would be markedly incompatible with the Party's stated aim: To gain and hold power for the Party elite over the vast majority of sheeple for eternity.

The secret is that harsh police states work -- but only until an external force knocks them over. That external force may be as simple as the death of the founder of the state (e.g., the dissolution of the Spanish fascist police state after the death of Franco), or may be a result of technological innovations elsewhere (e.g., the economic disaster that was the Soviet Union in the 1980's when the Information Age rendered their centrally planned industrial economy obsolete, or the economic disaster that was the Ottomon Empire in the 1880's when the Industrial Age rendered their economy of small blacksmiths and workshops obsolete), or may even be the result of armed intervention of alarmed neighbors e.g. the fate of Germany in the 1940's, but the inevitable result is that the police state fails. It may take decades, but what are decades in the life of a Party that aims to be eternal?

In addition, repression tends to suppress innovation. The example of the Ottoman Empire shows what happens when innovation is suppressed: people who would otherwise innovate and create are instead repressed and the state falls behind. Thus on a long term basis, harsh police states do not, and cannot, keep up technologically with states which do not have such repression.

Thus this perfect police state that the Party is creating does not, and cannot, use widespread repression in order to obtain the allegience of sufficient sheeple in order to obtain and maintain power. But then, widespread repression is not necessary. All that is necessary is to create, maintain, and perpetuate the illusion of freedom and choice. After all, if a sheeple feels free, who will he revolt against? Who is his oppressor, if he feels free?

The growth of advertising and oligopolies in the 20th Century filled in the last of the equation. A few simple principles allow preserving the illusion of freedom, the illusion of choice:
  1. People want what they're told to want. The American advertising industry has been amazing at creating demand for products that no one in their right mind would ever conceive as desirable. The most ludicrous example of all this is the pet rock, a 1975 fad which epitomized the whole power of advertising and fads. Then take the Backstreet Boys, nSync, etc.... please. Yet more manufactured demand for product that no one in their right mind would ever actually wish to listen to if left to their own devices. By setting up our media to present to people what they should believe, we allow people to freely "choose" to believe what we tell them to believe -- meaning that they will never rebel because they will never conceive that the way things are is anything other than the way they "should" be. We of the Party are, indeed, blessed that the majority of sheeple are gullible fools who will believe whatever they're told they should believe.
  2. Control of shelf space. The successful oligopolist, such as Coca-Cola, knows that the best way to keep competitors out of the marketplace is to simply buy up the marketplace and make sure competitors' wares are never displayed to consumers. This works because there is only limited shelf space in a marketplace devoted to soft drinks. Thus if you go into a marketplace, the two soft drink oligopolists have purchased a good 80% of the shelf space to be used for their product, leaving any competitor's product in a small area that is often overlooked. Similarly, there are only a certain number of radio and television frequencies available. By purchasing the majority of these, we of the Party insure that our own ideas are the only ideas widely dessimated in the marketplace of ideas, and thus that people will only "choose" our ideas, since they will know no others.
  3. The illusion of choice. The successful oligopolist knows that it is not enough to simply buy the shelf space. One must also fill it with products that are superficially different, yet basically the same. A perfect example is the American beer market. Virtually all brands available on the shelf are minor variations of the same Milwaukee horse piss -- but with pseudo-differences to give the illusion of choice (e.g. "Budweiser" vs. "Michelob", which are made in the same factory using the same vats, but which have a different advertising campaign, different label, etc.). Similarly, in the American provinces of Oceania people go to the polls under the dlusion that they have a "choice" of candidates, when, in actuality, no one who is not owned by the Demopublican oligopoly has any chance of obtaining the "shelf space" in the marketplace of ideas necessary to win (when was the last time you heard of a third-party candidate gaining a significant share of the vote in any election of significance?).
The net result of all these actions is that in the marketplace of ideas, only those of the Party are represented, yet people believe they freely "chose" to believe what we of the Party wish them to believe. By controlling the marketplace of ideas, we of the Party control how people think. And by controlling how people think, we insure the health and prosperity of the Party. Our "soft" police state, where we focus on controlling how people think rather than on forcing people to physically be obedient, could only be overthrown if somehow the marketplace of ideas was overthrown -- which will never happen, because that would not be in the Party's best interests. Thus we shall continue to control how people think -- and continue to rule Oceania -- forever.

The Conspiracy Theory Conspiracy

The human animals of the American provinces of Oceania do love their conspiracy theories. These theories range from the hilarious ( the UN-Amish One World Order conspiracy to the ludicrous ( The Bovine Illuminati by a large array of tin-foil-hat-wearing conspiracy theorists out to hawk their latest conspiracy theory for profit, complete with books and videos about mysterious zig-zagging bullets, (fuzzy) photos of purported "alien invaders at Area 51", and various silly one world government conspiracies, all calculated to be, at their heart, unbelievable.

Calculated to be unbelievable by... who?

It takes only a few whispers to start a conspiracy theory, after all. Who does this plethora of conspiracy theories benefit, other than the Party? Finding a real conspiracy -- such as the Party's conspiracy to destroy democracy and control the counting of votes -- amongst all these various whacked-out conspiracy theories is like finding a needle in a haystack! And if someone DOES point out that, say, both of the major electronic voting machine companies are owned by Republican operatives and that electronic ballots cannot be recounted, why, all we of the Party must do is wave our hands dismissively, "Just another crazy Internet conspiracy theory", and everybody nods their head wisely and moves on.

If you cannot see the use of this plethora of conspiracy theories when it comes to covering the trail of the Party's own conspiracy to consolidate its power in the American provinces of Oceania, I congratulate you, for you are a typical sheeple product of the American "educational" system (which does not exist -- America now has a TRAINING system, which teaches human animals various rote skills needed to obtain and hold a job, not an EDUCATIONAL system, which teaches people how to think critically and logically about their world). Whether the Party has a hand in creating these conspiracy theories, or merely takes advantage of their existence, we of the Party are indeed blessed by this plethora of conspiracy theories amongst the two-legged vermin that we aim to rule, as is our rightful due!

How to destroy democracy

Once upon a time, American government was of the people, by the people, for the people. Government existed because people wanted services that for some reason private enterprise did not provide, such as defense of the community, post roads, etc. In response, people gathered together to tax themselves in order to provide those services for themselves, and elected leaders from amongst themselves in order to oversee the actual implementation of what the community wished. This was called "democracy". And as a system of government, it was toxic to the Party. How in the world could we of the Party elite gain dominion over the sheeple, as is our rightful due, if the sheeple governed themselves?

As a response, we of the Party engaged in a multi-fold plan to corrupt this "democracy" and place the Party elite in charge as is their rightful due. This plan has multiple parts:
  1. Destroy the American educational system. Our first task was convincing liberals that the traditional rigorous curriculum, which fostered logical thinking and rationality, was "oppressive". Then we convinced the fundamentalist sky spirit cults like the Baptists and Pentecostals that public education was offensive to their cults because it fostered that evil "science" stuff. As a result, the sky spirit cults have taken over the school systems in many states and used that to water down the curriculum to the point where it no longer includes that rigorous "logic" and "rationality" stuff that is so toxic to Party propaganda, and instead turned into High Priests of Education passing down Received Truths into the ears of unwilling receptacles ("students").
  2. Destroy faith in government as a solution to people's real problems. This is working. The majority of Americans no longer believe that government is capable of providing services to them in a reasonable fashion. They believe this despite driving on government-financed highways to their jobs, relying on government-provided fire and police protection, etc... our Party commissars on hate radio and the editorial pages have indeed been working overtime with their propaganda that convinces people that government is incapable of solving people's real problems. And since our destruction of the school system no longer equips the sheeple with "logic" and "rationality", the sheeple are no longer capable of reasoning well enough to see through our Party commissar's hate and lies.
  3. Convince Americans that government is an alien imposition upon them, rather than being of the people, by the people, for the people. Once we convinced people that government could not solve real problems, this one was easy. For after all, if government does nothing for you, then all it is doing is taking taxes from your pocket in order to do... well, nothing. And surely nobody would agree to tax themselves in order to do... well, nothing, right? Thus we convinced people that government was an alien imposition upon them, rather than government being people drawing together to tax themselves in order to provide services not provided by the free market.

The result was gratifying for those of us in the Party. Since we were the only ones who believed that government was by the people, we were the only ones who bothered financing elections and running for office. And since the people as a whole believed that government was powerless to affect their everyday lives, they no longer held us of the Party responsible for the miseries of their everyday lives. Jobs gone overseas because that helps the bottom lines of we of the Party elite? Nothing to do with government! Health care expensive or unavailable because we of the Party elite wish to enhance our profits? Nothing to do with government. Yet at the same time, we of the Party are making sure that government is actually making health care expensive or unavailable, and is actually subsidizing exporting jobs overseas, since we know better -- we know that we can use government to enhance our lives. But the sheeple, in thrall to our Party commissars on hate radio and Fox TV and the editorial pages and etc., do not see this, because they lack the fundamental tools of logic and reasoning necessary to see this.

And so it is that we of the Party have gained our rightful dominion over the sheeple of the American provinces of Oceania. If the sheep looked up, they would see what we are doing to them. But the sheep never look up. Never. Their ignorance and blind faith in the Party's commissars is indeed a blessing for we of the Party!

Why the Party allowed the "execution video" to go public

There has been much furor, everywhere, about the so-called "execution video" where a Marine is seen shooting a wounded Iraqi. As explained by Buggieboy, a former Army infantryman, there is nothing unusual about this killing. A wounded enemy feigning death is most likely intending to pull a grenade out from under himself and throw it at the rear of any infantrymen who pass him by, or at the very least pull an AK-47 out from under himself and shoot at the rear of the infantrymen who just passed. Indeed, this has happened in earlier firefights in Iraq. Thus infantry are trained to "double-tap" any enemy who appear to be dead in order to make SURE they're dead.

So if nothing unusual happened here, why have the Party's pet poodles in the media made such an uproar? Well, it is simple: as with refusing to allow unarmed Iraqi men fleeing with their families out of Fallujah, it is our goal to remind the Iraqis of Srebrenica.

It does not matter whether the war is actually happening, for we can cause it to happen whenever we so desire, such as in Fallujah, and, since no decisive victory is possible, it does not matter whether the war is going well or badly.

But to insure war continues, we must insure that the Iraqi men actually fight. By reminding them of Srebrenica, we give them, in their minds, a choice: They may either fight, or they may be executed like helpless sheep. None of this is, of course, the fault of the men on the ground such as such as Lt. Cmdr. Joe Carpenter and Col. Mike Shupp. They would be apalled if you suggested the genocide of Iraqi men to them. They are concerned only about getting home alive. But their ignorance of what we of the Party have led Iraqi men to believe is irrelevant. We of the Party needed a military victory, and to have a military victory, we needed a battle. What better way to have a battle than to give the men of the city the choice of dying either with honor, or unarmed with a bullet in the head? And if the officers to whom we gave the orders are ignorant of the historical background here -- that sending men back into a besieged city is, in the Muslim world, typically the prelude to Srebrenica-style mass murder, and thus unwitting that this is the choice we are giving the men of the city -- it is even better! Why, then both sides are unknowingly serving as tools of the Party in our quest to tighten our rule of the American provinces of Oceania. Human ignorance is, indeed, the most important weapon in the arsenal of the Party!

By reminding the Iraqis of Srebrenica, we insure that the men of Iraq shall not welcome our soldiers with flowers and American flags. We insure that the war shall continue unto perpetuity, or until the Party desires otherwise. And so we insure the health of the Party.

The evolution of the evangelical sky spirit cults

Context: A letter from fundamentalist Bob Jones, to George W. Bush, congratulating President Bush on his election victory:

It is interesting to follow the evolution of these evangelical sky spirit cults. Unlike the organized sky spirit cults (such as the Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, etc.), the evangelical sky spirit cults have no central body which detirmines what the church believes in. Rather, each congregation is independent, and hires or fires its clergy depending upon how much they like the clergy's lies. Thus their beliefs evolve rapidly, unlike the turgidly-moving beliefs of the organized churches, and in ways that would quite surprise the Jew named Jesus whose words they regard as holy literature.

I saw this in action one time at a small country church near where my mother grew up. The deacons of the church had gotten it into their head that they needed a real Christly pastor, not some city slicker who was just there to take their money. So they went and found a pastor who was running a charity and living in poverty rather than in a crystal cathedral, and hired him to preach in their church on Sundays.

The first Sunday, he started on the normal liturgy. And then he kept going. And going. At 12 noon, the congregation started getting restless. Did not this man understand? More important things were happening in the world -- the Dallas Cowboys were playing the Oakland Raiders! At 12:15, as this pastor implored his flock to live a Christly life, and informed his flock that it was not just enough to SAY they accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, they had to MEAN it, which meant they had to LIVE it... people started getting up and walking out, why, this preacher had already made them miss most of the first quarter! By 12:20, half the congregation had walked out. By 12:30, the only people left were the feeble old church ladies, who had been raised right and would never be so impolite as to stand up and walk out while the preacher was speaking (and besides, they did not care about football, unlike the young'uns). They were busily fanning themselves in exasperation, however, like a collection of feeble butterflies fluttering in the gloom.

The next Sunday, only a few people showed up. The Sunday after that, even fewer. The collection plate was empty, containing only the few pennies the church ladies put into it. The treasury was depleting rapidly. In desperation, the deacons did the only thing they could do to keep the lights on and the church open: They raided the building fund, and paid off the pastor's contract, and told him to go back to running his charities.

The next pastor finished his sermon punctually at 11:50am, just enough time to get a couple of hymns in before the start of the game, and was swift to assure the churchgoers that all they had to do in order to get into Heaven was bend the knee and accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, and then all their sins would be washed away in the Blood of the Lamb and forgiven. The sky spirit cultists smiled in relief. Finally, a pastor who gave them what they wanted -- a faith where they could sin as much as they wanted, as long as they then begged Jesus for forgiveness and accepted him back into their hearts! Why, the only way they could go to the eternal flames of hell were if they somehow succumbed to death in the short few minutes between beating the crap out of their wife or kids, and praying to Jesus for forgiveness!

The new pastor was the pride of the church, and his fame soon spread far and wide. By the time six months had passed, the pastor's church was the most popular church in all the town, and the collection plate was triple what it had ever been before. The deacons smiled happily, and everybody lived happily ever after. Amen.

The point, the point... the evangelical sky spirit cults are in an inevitable race to the bottom, where they must continually water down their teachings in order to give their cult members guilt-free sermons that end on time so that the churchgoers don't miss the first quarter of football. Consider it to be an arms race, of sorts, where what they preach and what they teach has little to do with the bizarre fantasy/science fiction that they call their "Holy literature". And the people smile, and bob their heads, and praise their glorious preacher man, for he understands best of all what they REALLY want: Lies, bright and shining lies, lies to excuse their many failings, their small-mindedness, their hatred of others, lies to hold close and dear to themselves. For the truth... ah, but who wishes to know the truth, anyhow?

Subverting these evangelical sky spirit cults to serve the purposes of the Party was the work of literally minutes. They are so eager to embrace any lie that they wish to believe... after all, they embrace so many already, each and every day. And the fun part is that we need never deliver! In fact, it would not be in the Party's best interest to ever deliver! As with the war in Iraq, the war against non-Christians is one that we in the Party intend to never win. After all, the war against non-Christians serves the Party so well, giving the evangelical sky spirit cults such glorious hatreds to embrace, and such a tremendous sense of belonging and hope for the future! It would be a pity - nay, a tragedy - to deny these evangelical sky spirit cultists their sense of persecution that defines their very being by giving them what they want, victory over non-Christians. And the hilarious part is that they will never see that we never intend to give them what they want, because it is not what they want to see -- they will always, ALWAYS, blame liberals - athiests - anti-Christian - anti-American forces, rather than we in the Party who so carefully make sure that their war is never won!

Newspeak, reality, and the Party

One of the prime tools used by the Party is Newspeak: the re-definition of language to mean what we want it to mean. Those of you who believe in an objective reality also believe in words having a fixed meaning, but those of us in the Party know better.

Take, for example, the word "liberal". The dictionary lists it as meaning "open minded, caring." But we in the Party know better. Through our hoards of Party commissars on Hate Radio and elsewhere, we have successfully re-defined it as meaning "evil, Communistic, sinful." Thus those who would define their policies as "liberal" literally have no word left to describe their policies. We have stolen their word and re-defined it under them, such that the majority of the sheeple cannot even conceive of the concept of a "liberal" that is not "evil, Communistic, sinful."

Similarly, in our liberation of Fallujah, we confidently state that no civilians have been killed there. We know that this is true. We know that this is true because we define the definition of the word "civilian". And in this case, we have defined the word "insurgent" to mean any male between ages 16 and 40, whom we did not allow to flee Fallujah, and thus gave the choice of either picking up guns and fighting our soldiers, or dying unarmed. Predictably, they did exactly what the Party desired: they picked up guns and fought our soldiers.

Some wonder why it is that we of the Party sent insufficient forces into Iraq to pacify the country, and blame incompetence or hubris. But there was no hubris involved, only the assuration of the continuation of the Party. It does not matter whether the war is actually happening, for we can cause it to happen whenever we so desire, such as in Fallujah, and, since no decisive victory is possible, it does not matter whether the war is going well or badly. All that is needed is that a state of war should exist. In that way, we give our subjects what they want: red blood, red meat, the death of enemies, the destruction of the hated enemy's crops and homes, the trampling upon their battered bodies. We give our subjects an Other to hate, the most primal of instincts in the human animal -- hatred of all not in one's own clan or tribe. We give our subjects purpose -- supporting the President in his war against the tyrannical Islamo-fascists. We give our subjects an enemy to be defended from, and thus insure that our hand-picked puppets shall be called upon to defend our subjects. War is, indeed, good for the health of the Party.

Those of you in the reality-based community believe there is a single objective reality, which can be discerned through careful study. However, we of the Party know better. We know that what people see, what people hear, indeed what people feel about something is what they want to see or hear or feel. We act on that desire, that want, and make sure that the people get the bright and shiny lies that they want, the ones that hide the ugly truths from them, the lies that give them an enemy to hate, the lies that make them feel part of the Chosen People, God's people, Americans. We have liberated Fallujah and the people of Iraq are happy and the only people who died were evil ones. War is peace. Tyranny is freedom. Ignorance is strength. We have liberated the people of Fallujah, and they are well.

Lies are the truths that sooth our animal soul

Human civilization can be viewed as the perfection of the art of the lie. The human animal appears to have a need for meaning, for purpose to its pointless existence of ingesting sustenance and evacuating feces, day in, day out, from birth until death, an explanation for the pointless futility of the ludicrously brief human life. All of human history can, in essense, be summed up as the search for the perfect set of lies, the set of lies which most sooth the human soul.

Throughout human history, there have been those who step up to the challenge and provide a set of lies that people want to believe, desire to believe, give their faith and trust to. Ludicrous sky spirit cults with holy scriptures that read like bad science fiction novels are but one of the many set of lies that have filled this need for domination over others on the part of the liars, and the need for meaning on the part of the faithful.

There are some who consider religions and the like to be "mind viruses", but there is nothing "viral" here, any more than it is "viral" that a pigeon, when presented with birdseed, will peck it. It is simply the nature of the organism. Just as a pigeon, if confronted by two alternate seed bowls, will choose the seed bowl whose seeds look most promising, a human animal, when presented with two sets of lies, will choose the set of lies that look most promising for filling the needs of the human animal. And just as the pigeon may choose the junk food popcorn rather than the healthy bird seed mix, so, to, may the human animal turn from one of the healthier sets of lies, like the set of lies entitled "The American Dream", towards a set of lies far more insideous and unhealthy, such as the set of lies presented by the evangelical sky spirit cults that reject reason and science and love in exchange for a set of lies that most soothe the human animal's need for hate.

If you would properly select the set of lies that will be most appealing to the human animal, you must understand the basic nature of the animal and what appeals to it. The human animal, luckily, has been studied reasonably well. Some of the traits that a good set of lies must address are:
  1. Hatred of those not part of the herd or clan: It is biological nature of all humans to hate all those who are Other. This trait can be suppressed by education and/or social pressure, but is always there, inbred at the biological level. By providing an Other for the human animal to hate, you fill this need.
  2. Exclusivity. The human animal has a need to feel that it is a member of an exclusive group, one which not all may belong to. Provide a set of lies that reassure the human animal that it is special, that it is the Chosen, and you fill this need.
  3. Purpose. The human animal has a need to feel that its existence has a purpose. Provide a set of lies that provide purpose, and you fill this need.
  4. Hope. The human animal has a need to feel that there is something besides the pointless life of quiet desperation that it spends its existence in. So your set of lies must provide some hope that there is a way out of the misery and squalor to a better place. Most of the sky spirit cults have some sort of "paradise" that "you" go to once you die that fills this need, for example.
  5. Explanation. The human animal is the animal that asks "Why?". Your set of lies should provide an explanation for why the human animal's plight is one of misery and desperation, and should, ideally, have a "catch-all" explanation for all disasters that befall the human animal, such as, for example, "it was Sky Spirit's will" (substitute name of appropriate sky spirit -- "God", "Allah", "Jehovah", etc. -- as desired).
  6. Laziness. The human animal wants the set of lies which require it to make the least effort possible to fulfill the requirements of the set of lies. Thus, for example, the sky spirit cults that require that their followers live virtuously and go out into the community and help those in need are losing members to the sky spirit cults that require their members merely to swear allegience to a dead man, at which point their misdeeds are washed away in a flow of the dead man's blood. (Ugh, DISGUSTING!).
And there are yet more, but I go on too long already. In any event, I believe that my point is made: the Party merely provides the human animal with what it wants. Thus we in the Party gain power and dominion over others as is our nature, while those who swear their fealty and obedience to us get what they want too: lies, bright and shiny lies, lies that give meaning to their pointless existence of misery and pain. Surely there could be nothing wrong with such a consensual exchange?

On the existence of the Party

The Party exists not because of some overarching conspiracy, but because of human needs. If the Party did not exist, hate and fear and greed would lead people to create it. The Party, as such, is not a physical entity such as what you could touch or see or feel, or even a virtual entity such as a corporation or political party that you can send mail to. The Party is what happens when you, the people, want lies, want hate, want meaning in your pathetic little lives of quiet desperation, and turn towards those who would provide these to you. In a sense, the Party is a metaphor for the sickness at the heart of the American soul, a sickness that looks for easy excuses and scapegoats to blame for the misery and squalor of your daily existence.

If Rush Limbaugh did not exist... ah, but he does, and he does for only one reason: because he provides the lies that you, the American people, want to hear, the lies that give your life meaning. Men who desire wealth, who desire power, who desire dominion over others, will always migrate to these positions where they can then provide the lies you desire in exchange for your obedience and subservience. You, in essense, create the Party every day. Oh, not in the details. The details merely reinforce each other, like a neural network, striving towards the set of lies that gain the obedience and subservience of the most people. And one of those neural networks is inside your head, where, every day, your behavior is shaped by the lies that surround you and bathe you and cater to your every human foible and every human need.

I am Number Two. If Patrick McGoohan is Number Six, who is Number One?

Answer that, and you understand the nature of the Party, and how the Party, and those politicians and pundits who unwittingly channel it, came to power in the American provinces of Oceania.

Are you free?

Freedom is a myth, an illusion, a lie spread by those who would hide the nature of reality from you under a patina of bright and shining lies. The very nature of the human animal, with its need to intake food and excrete its remains on a regular basis, insures that "freedom" in the traditional meaning of the word is meaningless. Even the so-called "noble savage", in his jungle full of plenty, is a slave to those basic biological needs.

But the need to intake food and excrete feces is only one of the many biological needs that human animals have. There are numerous biological imperatives at the heart of the human animal. Every day, there are forces colliding that are greater than yourself, forces that are using the very humanity that is your lot, feeding you with lies that fill your need for belonging, forcing you to work long hours at meaningless jobs in order to feed your mouth with food which takes a car and housing and clothing, feeding you with the lies that give your very life meaning.... only once you realize that you are not free, then, and only then, can you step outside the box in which you have been placed by where you were born, how you were raised, what you see on your tv screen and hear on the radio and from family and friends, and begin in some small way to be free.

That is why the illusion of freedom is so important to the Soft Police State that we in the Party have been so diligently building for the past decades. As long as you believe you are free, you shall continue to be exactly what you are: a pawn, a tool, just another player in a game older than yourself and far larger. While I quote Orwell's 1984 liberally (if you read my posts, perhaps every other sentence is almost directly out of 1984), this is what Orwell got wrong. Orwell had just survived a war where oppressive censorship, restrictions on movement, and rationing was imposed on the populance in order to win the war against Nazi Germany. Even in 1948, when Orwell wrote, life in Britain was quite harsh. No dwellings had been built for close to a decade, so people were crammed multiple families to a flat. Gasoline was tightly rationed and there were no domestic automobile manufacturers operating anymore, so few automobiles were on the street -- they were predominently the domain of bicycles, motor scooters, and motor cycles. There were even shortages of food -- most basic food staples were rationed, and the calorie ration was around 2000 calories, supplemented by people's gardens whereever they could grow foods. The war had stripped Britain of its gold reserves, of its empire, of virtually all wealth that it had ever possessed, leaving Britons in the position of impoverished third world denizens, dependent upon the charity of others to get their economy restarted, and facing yet another war against yet another enemy, the Soviet Union.

Orwell's 1984 was his looking at 1948, and drawing it forwards. His mistake was in believing that this was the only, or best, way to motivate a people to behave in the way that the Party wished them to behave. It is quite possible, through skillful use of propaganda and encouragement of various behaviors, to cause large-scale movements of society without any explicit force. See, for example, the movement of women out of the U.S. workforce back into the home after World War II. There was no directive issued to companies telling them to fire their female workers. Rather, there was a lot of articles in the women's journals about the plight of the demobilized men coming home, how it was your patriotic duty to give these men a job, etc., and women who continued working when there were veterans who needed jobs were painted as unpatriotic and perhaps even un-American. The Party ordered not a single woman fired. Yet within 12 months of the end of the war, women's labor force participation had once again plummetted into the low teens, with women once again restricted -- by society, not by law -- to being nurses and teachers, a situation which lasted until the 1970's when it became obvious that paying for the retirement of the Baby Boom generation would require women's participation in the work force.

Anxiety, social pressure, keeping you too busy to think just doing the work that gains you your daily bread, rewarding you with silly trinkets such as pictures of dead people writ on paper if you behave in approved manner... all those are tools that the Party uses. We do not need oppression. The human animal, like all animals, is imminently trainable with the use of silly pictures of dead people on paper and other useless trinkets of that nature. The human animal performs better when not under the constant threat of punishment, just as a good hunting dog performs better when he has been trained via positive encouragement of desired behaviors, rather than by punishment. You are well trained, my friend. Well trained. And until you realize that, freedom is impossible.

Hate and Religion

In my prior entry, I talked about the role of hate in the propagation of the Party. Human animals have an inherent need for meaning in their pathetic lives of quiet desperation, a reason for why their life is so miserable and pointless. The Party gives them hate -- hatred of liberals, hatred of Michael Moore, hatred of gays, hatred of brown people overseas, the Party gives them plenty of Emmanuel Goldsteins to hate with all their heart and all their soul, a cleansing hate that excuses all the pointless misery of their lives by making it someone else's fault, liberals, Michael Moore, gays...

Religion serves much the same purpose: it gives human animals meaning in their pathetic miserable pointless lives, it allows them to endure the humiliations of being poor, of being ignorant, by allowing themselves to feel that they are better than the wealthy person who places their foot in front of them where they work as a shoe sales clerk, better than the wealthy person who drives a Mercedes while they drive a tired old Chevrolet sedan rattling its last gasps, it allows them to hate while feeling good about themselves.

And after all, that is the point. The Party only gives people what they want. The Party did not make these people want to hate. The Party did not make these people want to worship a sky spirit that offers cheap and facile explanations for the pointlessness of their lives. The Party did not create the ludicrious notion that simply declaiming your allegiance to the lord Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior and you're going to some ridiculous paradise full of harps and mansions and people with bird's wings coming out of their shoulders, no matter how much you've hated in the past, no matter what evil deeds you've done. But surely the Party would be remiss if it did not take advantage of the fact that religion serves so well to focus these people's hate, to satisfy these people's need for meaning in their pathetic lives.

Karl Marx famously proclaimed that religion was the opiate of the masses, and pronounced that for his perfect worker's paradise to arise on Earth, religion would need to be abolished so that man could see the world as it is, not through the cloud of fairy sky spirits and the lunatic ravings of holy scriptures that read like bad science fiction. But Karl Marx was an idealist who had a ludicrously high opinion of his fellow human beings. The Party does not make that mistake. We know that the people do not wish to see the world as it is. The world as it is is horrible, full of misery and pain. People want lies, cool, soothing lies to ease their lives of quiet desperation, and religion is one of the biggest.

We know that if religion is abolished, people will search for some other meaning in their lives, some other explanation for why they are so powerless in their pathetic little lives of quiet desperation. People would be confused, and angry, and perhaps even destructive of themselves and others. No, no, far better to encourage the worship of fairy sky spirits and the reading of bad science fiction posing as holy scriptures. All we are doing, by doing so, is giving people what they want. And while we are giving people what they want, they are giving us in the Party what we want -- their undying devotion. And all it took was to have our ignorant figurehead proclaim that he was "born again" and babble the right incantations. The Party surely has been blessed, to have such sky spirit cults so popular on the soil of Oceania!
