Newspeak, reality, and the Party
Take, for example, the word "liberal". The dictionary lists it as meaning "open minded, caring." But we in the Party know better. Through our hoards of Party commissars on Hate Radio and elsewhere, we have successfully re-defined it as meaning "evil, Communistic, sinful." Thus those who would define their policies as "liberal" literally have no word left to describe their policies. We have stolen their word and re-defined it under them, such that the majority of the sheeple cannot even conceive of the concept of a "liberal" that is not "evil, Communistic, sinful."
Similarly, in our liberation of Fallujah, we confidently state that no civilians have been killed there. We know that this is true. We know that this is true because we define the definition of the word "civilian". And in this case, we have defined the word "insurgent" to mean any male between ages 16 and 40, whom we did not allow to flee Fallujah, and thus gave the choice of either picking up guns and fighting our soldiers, or dying unarmed. Predictably, they did exactly what the Party desired: they picked up guns and fought our soldiers.
Some wonder why it is that we of the Party sent insufficient forces into Iraq to pacify the country, and blame incompetence or hubris. But there was no hubris involved, only the assuration of the continuation of the Party. It does not matter whether the war is actually happening, for we can cause it to happen whenever we so desire, such as in Fallujah, and, since no decisive victory is possible, it does not matter whether the war is going well or badly. All that is needed is that a state of war should exist. In that way, we give our subjects what they want: red blood, red meat, the death of enemies, the destruction of the hated enemy's crops and homes, the trampling upon their battered bodies. We give our subjects an Other to hate, the most primal of instincts in the human animal -- hatred of all not in one's own clan or tribe. We give our subjects purpose -- supporting the President in his war against the tyrannical Islamo-fascists. We give our subjects an enemy to be defended from, and thus insure that our hand-picked puppets shall be called upon to defend our subjects. War is, indeed, good for the health of the Party.
Those of you in the reality-based community believe there is a single objective reality, which can be discerned through careful study. However, we of the Party know better. We know that what people see, what people hear, indeed what people feel about something is what they want to see or hear or feel. We act on that desire, that want, and make sure that the people get the bright and shiny lies that they want, the ones that hide the ugly truths from them, the lies that give them an enemy to hate, the lies that make them feel part of the Chosen People, God's people, Americans. We have liberated Fallujah and the people of Iraq are happy and the only people who died were evil ones. War is peace. Tyranny is freedom. Ignorance is strength. We have liberated the people of Fallujah, and they are well.
